Natural exfoliator scrubs to keep your skin soft and smooth

3 Mar 2022

Let’s explore the benefits of exfoliation, DIY scrubs, and the beauty of our own sublime, natural exfoliator products

It should come as no surprise that exfoliating is a great way to keep your skin soft, clear, and radiant. In fact, you might already be using an exfoliator as part of your skincare routine. With the power to unclog your pores, prevent breakouts, boost circulation, even skin tone, and help other products to penetrate deeper, they’ve certainly earned their spot on the bathroom shelf.

However, not all exfoliators are equal. At Hotel Chocolat, Mother Nature will always hold the key to the best beauty secrets. That’s why we use a wealth of vibrant, natural ingredients to make our Rabot 1745 exfoliators.

In this article, we’ll look at the benefits of exfoliating and share a few DIY natural exfoliator ingredients. We’ll also introduce you to our own buffing recipes!

The benefits of exfoliating your skin

When you exfoliate, you use a cleansing scrub (shop-bought or homemade), exfoliating mitt (or loofah), or a particular chemical (like alpha or beta hydroxy acids), to remove dead skin cells from your skin’s surface. It can improve your skin’s appearance by:

  • Leaving skin looking brighter and feeling smoother
  • Improving the effectiveness of skincare products by aiding absorption
  • Preventing clogged pores, helping your skin stay clear and breakout-free
  • Increasing collagen production, to promote skin elasticity

Nature knows best: why choose natural skincare products?

While physical mitts and chemical peels can be good options for people with certain skin types or tricky skin conditions, when it comes to gentle yet effective daily skincare — we always prefer to go natural.

What do we mean by this? Many exfoliators on the market contain a concoction of chemicals. However, you can often get the same, or better, results with natural products. If you have sensitive skin, natural exfoliators with ingredients like sugar, coffee, cacao, and coconut are unlikely to cause irritation or adverse reactions.

It’s never a bad idea to go for natural products when shopping around and seeing what works for your skin. We also find that natural products have a more subtle, pleasant scent than exfoliators that are heavily scented with artificial fragrances. These artificial fragrances can also irritate your skin.

DIY natural exfoliator scrubs

If you’ve decided to try a natural exfoliator, you can make your own or buy one from a brand that packs its products with beautifying botanicals.

When shopping for your next buff, be sure to do your research and choose products that include natural ingredients as the key ingredients. More often than not, they’re just last-on-the-ingredients-list additions on the label. You might also want to look at how a brand sources ingredients, and choose one that strives to tread lightly on the planet.

Making your own exfoliator? Think about using some of the following ingredients (you might already have them in your cupboards):

  • Sugar – a worthy micro-bead replacement that works to physically buff away dry and dead skin.
  • Oats – a soothing ingredient that also helps to buff away dirt, oil, and dead skin cells.
  • Coffee grounds – the caffeine and chlorogenic acids in coffee help to reduce inflammation in the skin while buffing dry skin away.
  • Milk – containing lactic acid, milk helps to deep cleanse the skin and clear pores.
  • Coconut oil – this is a great exfoliator addition due to its hydrating properties. Exfoliating can strip your skin of moisture, but using a coconut oil-enriched scrub will help to replenish your skin.
  • Honey – helpful as a nourishing exfoliator ingredient due to its antibacterial and antiseptic properties.

Other ingredients like sea salt, green tea, and various essential oils can also be used. If using coarse exfoliants (like coarse sugar granules), you might want to stick to using your DIY scrub on your body, not your face. Large granules can damage your delicate facial skin.

There are lots of exfoliator recipes online, so have a browse for inspiration. You can also take a look at how the Rabot 1745 team have used these ingredients to create our fabulous exfoliators

Led by nature: Rabot 1745 exfoliators

We might be best known for our exquisite high-cacao chocolates, but we’ve applied our same passion for quality, natural ingredients to our luxurious skincare range inspired by the wild beauty of our Saint Lucian cacao estate.

Our Rabot 1745 exfoliators use nature’s finest skin-saving ingredients to buff away dead skin and lift impurities from your pores. We wanted each of our skincare products to feel like an indulgent yet utterly restorative treat. So we’ve paired effective exfoliants like finely ground coffee, cacao, and coconut shells with more replenishing ingredients like cocoa butter, jojoba seed oil, and sweet almond.

Coffee Body Scrub

Our Coffee Body Scrub harnesses the power of Arabica coffee and salt to lift dead skin cells and dirt from clogged pores. To ensure your skin is nourished as well as cleansed, we’ve added cocoa butter, vitamin E-rich sweet almond, and argan oil to the mix. And the result? Skin is left invigorated and utterly replenished. We’ll never say no to a warming cup of one of our aromatic coffees. But who said coffee was only good for drinking?

Sugar and Sour Orange Body Scrub

We’ve swapped energising coffee grounds for sugar as the exfoliant in our citrus-fresh Sugar and Sour Orange Body Scrub. This intensive body scrub packs a punch with blissfully fragrant orange and tangerine essential oils. It will leave you feeling revitalised, refreshed, and freshly pampered. Moisture-enriching argan and jojoba balance the exfoliating properties of sugar, for the smoothest, softest finish. Your skin will be left supple, glowing, and bursting with zesty freshness.

What’s more, both our Coffee and Sugar and Sour Orange Body Scrubs are packaged in 75% biodegradable, reusable coffee cups. These cups are made from bamboo, corn fibre, and wood fibre. We wanted our scrubs to be as low-waste as possible, and we’re committed to improving our eco-friendly packaging even further. We’re aiming for 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by the end of 2022. And, fortunately, we’re already 94% of the way there!

Three Shell Cacao, Almond, and Coconut Body Scrub

Nature’s fruit and nutshells make perfect natural exfoliants, which is why we’ve used a combination of three different shell fragments in our luxurious Three Shell Cacao, Almond, and Coconut Body Scrub. They provide the ideal amount of exfoliation while remaining gentle on your skin. Plus, they’re biodegradable, meaning they won’t cause harm to the environment after use. This sublime scrub smells great too. Mellow notes of almond and coconut will transport you to the tropical island of Saint Lucia. Did you know that’s the home of our cacao estate?

Pumice Pod Soap

Our Pumice Pod Soap buffs your skin as you wash, allowing you to cleanse, exfoliate and nourish all at once. This vegan-friendly pod contains vitamin E-rich coconut oil to hydrate your skin, replenishing those important natural oils that can be lost during exfoliation. All you have to do is lather and wash the day away in a haze of sunny Caribbean scents.

Will you be making a homemade natural scrub or do our heavenly creations tempt you? Either way, we hope you enjoy the benefits that come with using high-quality natural ingredients to cleanse and protect your pores.
