What is a good skincare routine?
3 Apr 2020
A good skincare routine can leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated. Whilst most people on the internet suggest keeping on top of your skincare routine, how do you actually know if you’re following the right steps?
Following a skincare routine means that you apply skincare products daily. Although it might seem like a bit of a chore, following a strict routine can do wonders for your skin. Not only does using products which contain a high amount of natural oils – such as cocoa butter – lock in moisture, keeping your skin hydrated, but it can also protect you from infections.
According to Diana K. Blythe, a pediatrician from Pediatric Associates, keeping our skin healthy prevents the skin from cracking when it’s dry, which ensures infections can’t enter our body through wounds in our skin. But, with endless amounts of advice on the internet, how do we know which is the right way to go about our skincare routine?
Choose the right beauty product for your skin type
Before you invest in any skincare product, it’s important to find out what type of beauty product suits your skin type the best. For example, if you have dry skin then beauty products which are rich in moisture are best to apply: look for products which contain ingredients that are high in fatty acids, like cocoa butter, to lock in the maximum amount of hydration. Our Cacao and Kaolin Thermal Clay Body Mask is rich in cocoa butter, and also uses ingredients such as macadamia seed and kaolin clay to quench your skin.
If you have an oily skin type then you want to avoid beauty products which are high in oils – whilst you still need moisturise your skin, choosing a serum or a lotion is a much lighter option for your skin. Not only does this mean you won’t drown your skin in moisture, but it also means make up goes on much more smoothly – using a light moisturiser means your foundation is a lot less likely to slide off or crease.
For sensitive skin types, beauty products which are heavily scented can irritate the skin. Opt for a product which is scent free, high in moisture and contains anti-inflammatory properties such as aloe vera. Our soothing Aloe Vera Shower Gel cleanses, without stripping your body of moisture, and our cocoa butter-rich Liquid Chocolate Body Mask can be spread onto dried skin after showering.
Daytime skincare routine
Start your day off by cleaning your face – this refreshes your skin, and removes any excess product that might still be left on your face from the night. If your face feels dry, then using a lightweight serum is a good way to add moisture, without making your skin feel too oily. To refresh the eyes, lightly tap an eye cream or gel around the eyes to brighten up sleepy eyes, adding moisture which helps to remove dark circles around the eyes.
Throughout the day, you’ll want to keep your hands and lips hydrated – skin can dry out in both hot and cold climates, so it’s important to always keep them moisturised so that they don’t crack and become sore. Our Chocolate Fruit Lip Balm uses natural ingredients, such as almond oil, cacao butter and rosemary leaf extract to revive your smile. Great for on the go, our Cacao and Coconut Hand Cream is quickly absorbed, soothing and regenerating the skin
Nighttime skincare routine
Your skincare routine can start even before you’ve gotten out of the bath: our Cacao & Almond Bath & Body Oil can be poured into warm running water so that you can nourish your skin, whilst bathing in a heavenly scent.
Once you’ve dried off and all makeup is removed, you should use a serum to lock in moisture on your face. Depending on your skin type, you might want to opt for a heavier moisturiser – i.e a beauty product that contains more cocoa butter – for extra moisture throughout the night. Our Cacao and Almond Body Butter is rich in fatty acids, meaning you can quench your skin’s thirst for hydration all night long.
Whatever your skin type is, it’s important to follow a skincare routine that nourishes and replenishes your skin, so that you constantly feel fresh and glowing – with or without makeup.
