Troubleshooting & FAQ's
Don't forget the ALL-NEW Velvetiser is an electrical appliance. You cannot put the Velvetiser, it's whisk, or lid into the dishwasher or immerse the Velvetiser and is power base in liquid. This is especially important for the power base and under the machine - keep these dry.
FAQ's
What is a Velvetiser ®?
The Velvetiser is a machine that makes hot and cold barista-grade drinking chocolate. It melds real chocolate and milk together even at chilled temperatures, delivering hot and cold drinking chocolate at the touch of a button.
How is using the Velvetiser different to making instant hot chocolate or milkshakes?
The Velvetiser is engineered to deliver velvet-smooth results and satisfying cacao depth in every sip. Unlike instant drinking chocolate, Velvetiser single-serves are made with real high-cacao chocolate. The Velvetiser’s unique vortex-effect melds this chocolate with milk, delivering a velvet-smooth mouthfeel and the happiness only real chocolate can deliver.
How does a Velvetiser work?
The all-NEW Velvetiser melds real chocolate and milk using a unique vortex-effect. The whisk spins to create a vortex while its petals cut through the liquid to form ultra-fine passages of air. Shaped to act as barrier to flow, InnerPod ridges condense these air passages, aid the melding process and stabilise the vortex driven by the whisk. Towards the end, the whisk slows to minimise turbulence. The result? A velvet-smooth finish and unrivalled chocolate crema.
Engineered to work in harmony with our hot and cold drinking chocolate recipes, the Velvetiser’s thermodynamic programming has two settings: one for hot chocolate, one for cold. Its hot chocolate setting melds real chocolate flakes at approximately 68 – 70 degrees Celsius, the optimum melting point for chocolate. Its cold chocolate setting is uniquely calibrated to pulse at the beginning, gently melding finely milled real chocolate with pre-chilled milk.

What sort of milk can I use?
For the perfect serve, we recommend the use of semi-skimmed pasteurised milk or barista-grade dairy alternative, provided it’s pre-chilled, smooth and non-textured. You can even use water, either on its own or mixed 50/50 with milk.
How long does it take?
To make hot drinking chocolate, the Velvetiser melds our real chocolate flakes at approximately 68 – 70 degrees Celsius, the optimum melting point for chocolate. To make cold drinking chocolate, it pulses to gently meld our finely milled real chocolate with pre-chilled milk. Both cycles take just a couple of minutes to complete, depending on the temperature of the milk used.
Can I grate my own chocolate into the Velvetiser?
It’s best to leave the grating to us. Our hot and cold drinking chocolate recipes are precisely measured, at a precise consistency, to work in harmony with Velvetiser: real chocolate flakes for hot, finely milled real chocolate for cold. Our chocolatiers refined these recipes through years of obsessive tasting and measuring.
Unevenly grated chocolate or instant hot chocolate can meld inconsistently, compromising the texture of your drinking chocolate. Worse still, unregulated pieces of chocolate can create heat pockets that strain the motor or even decouple the magnet of the whisk, risking damage to your Velvetiser.
If you're wondering: can you use hot chocolate powder in a Velvetiser? The answer is, we wouldn’t recommend it. The Velvetiser is calibrated to meld our hot recipes at the optimum melting point for real chocolate. Instant hot chocolate powder is not designed to work with the Velvetiser’s vortex-effect or thermodynamic programming.
Just like our hot recipes, our cold drinking chocolate is made with real finely milled chocolate. This is what gives our cold recipes that incomparable creaminess and cacao depth. This finely milled consistency works in harmony with the Velvetiser’s vortex-effect – generated by patented InnerPod ridges and a custom-designed whisk – for barista-grade, velvet-smooth results. Precisely portioned for optimum cacao depth, cold drinking chocolate is carefully curated with ingredients that shine even when served cold.
For best results, explore our library of hot and cold single-serves made with real, high-cacao chocolate – each perfectly portioned to create that perfect serve.

Can you make coffee in a Velvetiser?
While you can’t make an ordinary coffee, you can go one better with our range of mocha lattes. Made to work in harmony with the Velvetiser, they deliver the same velvet-smooth results as our drinking chocolate, with a mellow coffee finish.
Making a barista-grade mocha latte is just as easy as creating drinking chocolate. Simply pour 220ml of milk or dairy alternative into the Velvetiser up to the max indicator line. Take your mocha latte single-serve, shake well, then add in. Close the lid, turn the dial right, press it down and let the Velvetiser work its magic.
Can I clean my PodcupTM and PodglassTM in the dishwasher?
Yes, your Podcup and Podglass are safe to clean in your dishwasher. They’re also safe for use in your microwave and freezer – just avoid extreme changes in temperature to keep them in tip-top condition.
Troubleshooting
My hot drinking chocolate or mocha latte isn’t hot enough for me.
The Velvetiser has been programmed to meld hot drinking chocolate and mocha lattes at approximately 68 – 70 degrees Celsius (around 158 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the optimum melting point for chocolate, as excess heat can flatten or burn chocolate’s rich, creamy notes. A simple tip if you prefer yours hotter is to fill your Podcup with boiling water and empty it before pouring in your hot drinking chocolate or mocha latte.
How do I clean the Velvetiser and its parts?
Watch our step-by-step video guide on how to clean a Velvetiser, or follow the instructions below. New to the Velvetiser? Watch this video guide on how to clean yours for the first time.
1. Unplug the Velvetiser from the outlet and allow to cool before manual cleaning. Once cooled, remove the Velvetiser from its power base.
2. Rinse the inside of the Velvetiser with cold water and wipe with a soft sponge or cloth and a drop of dishwashing soap.
3. Wash the lid and whisk in warm soapy water with a soft cloth to avoid damage to surfaces.
4. Wipe the Velvetiser’s handle with a soft damp cloth. Do not use harsh detergents, bleach or abrasive cleansers. Dry before putting away or in storage and keep away from prolonged exposure to heat sources.
Do not immerse the Velvetiser or its power base in liquid. The Velvetiser and its components – including whisk and lid – are not dishwasher safe.

There’s dark smudges/residue on the inside of my Velvetiser.
After using your Velvetiser to make hot drinking chocolate, you may notice some residue at the base of the InnerPod. This should rinse away easily and is a normal result of the high cacao content in our drinking chocolate. With cold drinking chocolate, you might see some finely milled real chocolate left in the InnerPod. Again, this is to be expected and will wash off with a quick clean. To avoid lumps, give your single-serve sachets a good shake before pouring, and aim for even distribution rather than tipping the contents into one spot.
There’s dark smudges/residue on the whisk
On a Velvetiser that’s well-loved and frequently used, you may also notice some dark smudges collecting at the base of the whisk. These are a natural result of the high cacao content in our drinking chocolate — a build-up of chocolate solids and milk that’s easily cleaned with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth.
My Velvetiser won’t switch on/switches off after a few seconds.
If you’re making consecutive drinks, rinse the inside of the Velvetisereach time with cold water between uses. This resets the Velvetiser’s temperature thermostat. If your Velvetiser still has trouble powering, unplug it from the outlet and check the whisk for chocolate residue. If any chocolate is caught beneath the whisk, gently wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Always insert the whisk first, then add milk, then follow with Hotel Chocolat drinking chocolate.
