What is a hot chocolate spoon?

Velvety, rich, and decadent. A hot chocolate spoon is a quick and simple recipe that all the family can enjoy.

Essentially, a hot chocolate spoon (or hot chocolate stirrer) is a block of luxurious chocolate set into a lollipop stick. You stir the hot chocolate spoon into hot milk, allowing the chocolate to melt gorgeously into it. The result? An irresistible mug of hot chocolate with no need to weigh out ingredients or whisk.

The joy of a hot chocolate spoon is the fact you can create a variety of shapes and add any kind of topping you like. Whipping a batch up is a fantastic activity to keep the kids occupied and they make simple yet effective gifts.

How to make a hot chocolate spoon?

To make a hot chocolate spoon, you need top-quality chocolate (we recommend our 40% Milk Chocolate Batons as a starting point, but white and dark chocolate varieties work well too).

You’ll also need lolly pop sticks and some form of mould. This could be as simple as recycled yoghurt pots or you could choose some specially-designed chocolate moulds for a fun twist.

How to melt the chocolate

When melting chocolate, it’s important to remember that it can easily burn. Your best bet is to use a bain-marie or double boiler. Simply boil water in a pan and place your chocolate in a glass bowl over the pan. This will make the chocolate melt gradually.

Another option is to melt your chocolate in the microwave. Just make sure you stir it frequently and keep an eye on it.

Now for the method

Once you’ve melted the chocolate, you can get creative.

  • Firstly, add a dab of oil to your yoghurt pots or moulds. (If you use a dedicated chocolate mould, you shouldn’t need to grease it).
  • Spoon chocolate into the pots until they are ¾ full.
  • Put your lolly pop sticks into your chocolate pots.
  • Top with delights of your choice! See below for our suggestions.
  • Once you’re happy, set the chocolate in the fridge until solid (about four hours).

After your hot chocolate spoons have hardened in the fridge, gently ease them out of their yoghurt casing. And voila! You have your very own collection of hot chocolate spoons ready for some hot milk stirring.

Your hot chocolate spoons can be kept at room temperature, but we recommend you keep them in the fridge until they are ready to use, especially in the summer.

Delicious flavour and topping combinations

Unlike your regular hot chocolate, you can get creative with your chocolate spoons. You don’t have to limit yourself to plain chocolate, why not mix things up a bit? Not only does this make for an inventive and flavoursome treat, but it’s also a great activity for children to enjoy.

At Hotel Chocolate, we have a range of chocolate slab selectors that would make for exciting additions to great hot chocolates. For a biscuit crunch, we recommend our Rocky Road Chocolate Slab Selector, you can even add some extra marshmallows on top of this one.

For a nostalgic treat, why not try our Banoffee Pie Chocolate Selector. You can get inventive with this one by adding banana chips on top for a decadent drink with a wholesome edge.

Complimentary combos

The options are endless when it comes to toppings.

Dark and milk chocolate tends to pair well with fruit and nuts, so why not add some dried fruit, cashews or crystallised ginger to your hot chocolate spoon? For the festive season, try topping with cinnamon sticks or pieces of mince pie to really get in the spirit.

White chocolate makes for a silky smooth hot chocolate that is often a little sweeter than milk chocolate. The delicate notes of white chocolate pair well with tangy fruits like mango and lemon. You could even crumble our White Chocolate Mango Selectors onto your hot chocolate spoon for a zesty, summery treat.

Using seasonal moulds, you could also create delicious white chocolate Christmas versions. Top with some red and green sprinkles for a truly festive finish!
