Fun recipes for the eggs-half-full people amongst us. Bring a touch of indulgence to your Easter table
The Easter holiday goes hand in hand with arts and crafts. Over the years, we’re sure you’ve experimented with the lot — from decorated Easter bonnets to colourful seasonal tablescapes. But when your creative side meets your love of chocolate — that’s when the fun really begins. And that’s exactly what the trend of filled Easter egg desserts embraces.

What is a filled Easter egg dessert?
As traditional Easter eggs are hollow, you can fill them with all kinds of treats. Easter egg desserts take this to extremes.
You may have heard of people filling Easter eggs with cereal or chocolate bars, but the following creations are a little more elaborate. They’re typically influenced by popular no-bake desserts, then set within the chocolate egg halves for a seasonal twist.
Perfect the art, and your dessert will be as easy on the eye as it is on the taste buds.
How do I split the egg in half?
First thing’s first, you’ll need to slice the egg neatly into two halves, which can be easier said than done. And there’s not a whole lot of desserts you can make in a pile of chocolate shards.
Warm a sharp knife in warm water and run it steadily along the seam of the egg. Continue circling around until it naturally splits in half. Another top tip for when you’re filling the halves is to place the eggs flat in shallow bowls and support the sides with foil. This way, they shouldn’t sway around throughout, making them easier to work with.
Traditional Easter eggs tend to feature very thin chocolate, which can make them tricky to slice without breaking. At Hotel Chocolat, we take a different approach. While other chocolatiers may have gone down the route of super-fine delicate shells, we’ve opted for chunky chocolate that really makes a statement. Our Extra Thick Easter Eggs and gargantuan Ostrich Eggs are dense in the best way. They offer a satisfying melt-in-the-mouth texture and are sure to last the whole of the Easter holidays — if you can resist nibbling. If you’re using one of our luxury Easter eggs, you should be able to breal the shells open neatly and retain that iconic Easter shape.
What can I fill easter eggs with?
Really, the only limit here is your imagination; and perhaps a little attention to temperature control. If you plan on melting any of your filling ingredients, allow them to cool before adding them to the egg halves. Or if they can’t cool fully, work fast!
Some popular fillings you might want to try include chocolate ganache or cheesecake mixture, topped with your favourite Easter treats. To go all the way with the Easter theme, we’d recommend a mix of our adorable Easter bunnies and a selection of smaller chocolate eggs (available in both our Easter H-box and our Easter Sleekster).
Luxurious Easter egg dessert ideas
If you’d prefer to follow a recipe, here are some of the most inspired creations we’ve seen.
Cheesecake-filled Easter egg
The creamy cheesecake filling layered over a crunchy biscuit base makes this BBC Good Food recipe a sensation of all the best textures.
- Pour 75g of biscuits into a food bag and crush them into crumbs using the end of a rolling pin. The recipe calls for digestives, but feel free to switch up with your favourites. Ginger biscuits are a great alternative.
- Add 25g of melted butter to the biscuits and combine thoroughly.
- Spoon the mixture into the Easter egg halves and smooth down with a spatula or spoon.
- Wait for the mixture to cool slightly, add it to the egg halves, and then chill them in the fridge for a while.
- Meanwhile, mix 75g of mascarpone, 100g of soft cheese, 2 tablespoons of icing sugar and 2 tablespoons of cocoa in a wooden bowl.
- Layer the cheese filling over the chilled biscuit base. Smooth down with a spatula.
- Either leave to chill for a few hours, or if you wish to add Easter toppings for some extra pizzazz, remove the eggs about halfway through. Place your toppings over the half set mixture, then return to the fridge.
- When fully set, drizzle with caramel or melted chocolate to serve.

Easter egg filled with chocolate ganache
With a slightly denser and more velvety creaminess, this Recipes from Italy method makes for a mouthwatering seasonal dessert.
- Chop 250g of dark chocolate into small pieces.
- In a small saucepan, melt 250ml of heavy whipping cream and 30g of unsalted butter on a low heat. As soon as the butter has melted, turn off the heat.
- Once removed from the heat, add the dark chocolate and stir until melted.
- Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Whisk the mixture until it’s puffy and soft. This should take around 10 minutes with an electric mixer, or longer if you’re whisking manually.
- Spoon the ganache into the egg halves, add toppings and serve.
Jelly and fruit-filled Easter eggs
This is definitely going to be a popular one with the youngsters – or the adults who are still children at heart! Kids birthday party meets Easter celebrations, it’s a fun sweet treat – and it’s really simple to make.
- Make up a packet of jelly cubes according to the pack instructions. Allow it to cool at room temperature for 15 minutes.
- Divide fruit, chocolate and fresh herbs between the egg halves. Some winning combinations are raspberry jelly with berries, and strawberry jelly with strawberries, mint and Strawberry and White Chocolate Selectors.
- Place the eggs in the fridge and allow the jelly to set.
Berry filled Easter egg
Another quick one which can be dressed up or down depending on how extravagant you’re feeling. Taking it back to basics, all you really need to do is fill the egg halves with your choice of berries, and add a dollop of whipped cream.
But it is Easter, so why stop there? For a little extra indulgence, try marinating the berries in your favourite liqueur or juice beforehand; or you can flavour the cream instead.
