Rabot Estate - History since 1745 and the Battle of Rabot



1745 Count Rabot given an estate near the old capital, Soufriere. Builds French style estate house in a natural hurricane protected spot between the Pitons.

1660-1814 British and French battle throughout the Caribbean. St Lucia changes hands fourteen times.

1795 The Battle of Rabot. British troops with West Indian regiment march from the south of the island to take Soufriere. They meet the French and Brigand freedom fighters army at Rabot Estate and a fierce battle is fought around the lake. The British are beaten back and withdraw. The site of the battle is clearly visible at Rabot Estate.

c. 1820 – 1875 The years of the huge sugar factory in the valley at Rabot Estate, now a picturesque ruin.

1930's Clement Boase buys Rabot Estate and passes to heirs until 2006.

1979 St Lucia gains full independence.

2006 Hotel Chocolat buys Rabot Estate. Phil and Judy Buckley move to St Lucia to carry out the plan.

2006 Single Estate chocolate from St Lucia goes on sale for the first time.

2007 Single Origin chocolate from St Lucia goes on sale for the first time.
